 What is the Competition Team?

The NDAOD Competition Team provides additional opportunities for our students who want to take their dancing to the next level. Our goal is to provide dancers with challenging, educational, and technically focused training that supports their growth, both onstage and in everyday life. Through this experience, we aim to strengthen each dancer’s skills while building confidence, independence, and creative talent. We also believe that competition can be fun and rewarding when approached with dedication, support, and a growth mindset.

We attend 3 competitions (competitive dance performance events amongst other studios) each year: 2 local and 1 traveling.

In order to best serve our dancers on the Competition Team, dancers are placed on the Junior, Teen, or Senior Competition Team based on skill, technique, stage presence, maturity, and attitude. Based on auditions, NDAOD may alter the number of teams as we see fit. Dancers on the Junior Competition Team will be guaranteed one competition piece that they will work on throughout the year. Teen Competition Team will be guaranteed two competition pieces, and Senior Competition Team members will be guaranteed three competition pieces. Dancers will be selected for pieces based on cohesiveness of the dancers, genre, and choreographer’s vision.

Our annual seasons consist of:
-Auditions: June
-August Intensives (training and choreography to kick off the season)
-Weekly technique class and group rehearsals
-Team bonding events
-Exhibition performances
-Mocketition (January)
-3 Competitions (Feb-May)
-Optional Solo/Duo/Trio/SG Competition (even years)
-Banquet/ End of Year Celebration
-Spring Recital performances
-Optional Nationals Competition (odd years)

Solo/Duo/Trio/Small Groups:
Competition Team Members who have at least one year of experience on the NDAOD Competition Team are eligible to compete Solos, Duos, Trios, or additional Small Groups at competition. Dancers who are eligible for a Solo/Duo/Trio/SG will have the option to request multiple Solo/Duos/Trios/SGs. Solo/Duo/Trio/SG opportunities are based on dancer’s preferences (genre, dance size) and choreographer availability and interest. Dancers have the opportunity to self-choreograph as well. Dancers will be placed in one Solo/Duo/Trio/SG before anyone is placed in additional Solo/Duo/Trio/SGs. These pieces will not perform in the Spring Recital.
